What do they mean?

Alex may be feeling hurt and worn down, since they waited all evening and now say it keeps happening. You could help most by acknowledging that this has happened before and that it matters to Alex, so they feel heard rather than brushed off.

You could say

I hear that it keeps happening, and I can see why that’s hard. I’m sorry I left you waiting. Can we talk about what’s been getting in the way?

Only you see this. Nothing goes to Alex until you tap Send.

What do they mean?

Not sure how a message was meant? Deux gives a gentle read of their last message, how they may feel and what they may need, and suggests one reply.

Deux: “Fine, whatever” from a coworker often means they’re annoyed or feel brushed off, but it could also be a passing mood. Since I don’t know what came before it, a calm, open reply works best:

“Hey, it sounded like something’s bothering you. Want to talk about it?”

Two looks and four colors each, so Deux fits couples, friends, family and work. Soft is calm, airy and rounded. Bold is playful, loud and drawn.

Private by design

What Deux does with your messages, said plainly.

  • Only when you ask

    Deux only reads a chat when you ask. Chat works fine without it.

  • Private to you

    What you ask Deux, and what it answers, is private to you. The one exception is when you both invite Deux into a chat.

  • You tap Send

    Nothing is sent until you tap Send. Deux suggests, and you decide.

  • Both say yes

    Deux joins a chat only if you both invite it. The other person has to agree first.

  • Honest about the AI

    When you ask, your draft and the recent messages in that chat, including theirs, go to an outside AI service so Deux can reply.

  • Yours to delete

    You can delete your account in the app at any time: Menu > Privacy & safety > Delete account.

Questions

Is it free?

Chatting in Deux is free. During the private beta nothing costs money, and you can try Deux’s helper. Later it may become part of an optional subscription, and the price is always shown in the app before you buy anything.

Which phones?

iPhone and Android. The private beta is open to both, and invitations go out in waves. Tell us which phone you use when you write to join.

Is Deux a therapist?

No. Deux is a helper that suggests words. It is not therapy, medical care, legal advice or an emergency service. If someone may be in danger, contact your local emergency number or someone you trust, or find a helpline near you (opens in a new tab).

Who can see my messages?

You and the person you are chatting with. Deux reads a chat only when you ask, and what you ask Deux is private to you, unless you both invite Deux into the chat. When you ask, the text goes to an outside AI service so Deux can reply.

Messages are kept by the services that run Deux, so they are not end-to-end encrypted. The Privacy Policy lists those services and says Deux does not sell personal information.

How do I delete my account?

In the app: Menu > Privacy & safety > Delete account. If you cannot open the app, the account deletion page explains what to do. Deleting Deux does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription, so cancel that in your store settings.

Can I use it for groups?

Yes. You can make group chats too. Deux’s private help works there as well, and Catch up sums up what you missed. Only you see it.

Anyone in the group can also write @Deux to ask a question, and everyone in the group sees the answer. It can be turned off in the group’s settings.

Can Deux translate?

Yes. When someone writes in another language, tap Translate under their message to read it in yours, or have Deux translate that chat for you every time. Only you see the translations. To translate, the text goes to an outside AI service.
